FAQ

What is Drync?

Drync is an iPhone application that lets you research and remember wines that you enjoy. Type in a few words from the wine label, and let Drync do the work. Drync searches through literally hundreds of thousands of wines to find your wine. Drync is not limited to a single database of information, but rather combines listings from across the web to yield the largest single source of wine information available today.Once you find your wine using Drync, you can read professional reviews and ratings, see details about the wine including market prices, share the wine with friends, add it to your Virtual Cellar, and even buy it. You can mark the wines in your cellar with “I own”, “I want”, and/or “I drank”, and filter on those attributes when viewing your cellar.

How do I get Drync on my iPhone?

Drync is available through Apple’s app store. For Drync Wine Fee, click on this link. For Drync Wine Pro, click here. In the near future, Drync will be available on the web and other mobile platforms.

How do I find the wine I’m drinking?

Easily! Simple type a few key words from the wine’s label into Drync’s Search page and click ‘Search’. You will see a message that says “Dryncing…please wait” while Drync goes out onto the Internet to find your wine. This process can take up to 20 seconds, depending on the specificity of your request. More specific requests, such as “Sterling Vineyards Cab Reserve 1997″, are faster than more general requests, such as “Sterling Cabernet”.

What is a Virtual Cellar?

Your Virtual Cellar is the place you save wines you like, want, own, and/or have consumed.

How do I save a wine to my Virtual Cellar?

After you find your wine using Drync Search, you may then click ‘Add Rating/Notes & Save to Cellar’. After you rate the wine (by touching the bottles), and add your tasting notes, and touch ‘I want’, ‘I own’, and/or ‘I drank’, you may then touch ‘Add to Cellar’ and the wine will be added to your online Virtual Cellar.

Where are the wines in my Virtual Cellar stored?

Your virtual cellar is stored on Drync servers, and therefore your wines will not be lost if your iPhone crashes or you upgrade the application.

What are Quick Notes?

Quick Notes are designed to allow you to quickly jot a note to yourself about a wine, without having to perform a Search. Also, Quick Notes are available even if your Internet is not. In either case, jot the wine name, vintage and notes down and do the research on the wine later when you have time or Internet.

What’s the difference between Quick Notes and Virtual Cellar?

Quick Notes and entries in your Virtual Cellar are different. Quick Notes are stored on-board your iPhone/iTouch and designed to be, well, quick. Also, they do not require an Internet connection. Your Virtual Cellar is stored on our servers (so it will never be lost!), and entries in your cellar must be the result of a Search.

How do I add a Quick Note to my Virtual Cellar?

Quick Notes are not automatically added to your Virtual Cellar. Generally, to store a wine in your Virtual Cellar you must identify it via a search. To “convert” a Quick Note to a Virtual Cellar entry you must press the blue arrow on the Quick Notes Detail view. This action will initiate a Search of the wine. From the Search results page, select the correct wine. You will be asked to confirm that you wish to add that wine to your Cellar. Saying ‘yes’ will not only add the wine to your Virtual Cellar, but it will also transfer over your Rating and Notes. How do I buy a wine?

How do I use the Twitter feature?

  1. Go to Drync Wine Settings. These can be found from your Home Screen (press the Home button on your iPhone/iTouch), and scroll down to Drync Wine Settings.
  2. Enter your Twitter credentials, and flip the “Cellar Updates” ON

How does it work?

If you have Cellar Updates turned ON, every time you add a wine to your cellar, you will see a tweet about it, including your rating if you have given one.

Also, there are Tweet buttons on Wine Detail pages (after you Search and when viewing a wine in your Cellar). The buttons are entitled: “Twitter: I am drinking this wine”. Pressing that will generate a tweet about the particular wine you are viewing.

What are Top Wines (Featured, Most Popular, Most Wanted)?

  • Featured - this is usually a randomized list of TOP RATED wines by Drync users. Occasionally we will promote specific wines or reviewers.
  • Most Popular - this is a list of the 20 most added wines in people’s Drync Cellars
  • Most Wanted - a list of the 20 most wanted (ie. marked with the ‘I want’ flag) wines

What should I do if Drync wine will not start, or my Cellar disappears?

The iPhone is not a perfect device, and sometimes suffers from memory leaks and other problems that can cause unpredictable results. If for some reason Drync Wine will not start, or your Cellar goes missing, follow these steps:

  • Do a cold boot of your device. This is done by holding the power key down for a few seconds, powering down completely, and re-starting
  • If you’re having a problem with your Cellar, try adding a wine after the cold boot
  • If things are still not improving, remove the app and re-install it from the app store. Apple will not charge you again if you paid for Drync Wine Pro. NOTE - You will NOT lose your Cellar entries, but you WILL lose your Quick Notes by removing the app.
  • If none of that fixes the problems, send your phone/Touch’s UDID to us at feedback@drync.com, along with a note stating the problem. To get your UDID, download the free app “ad hoc helper”. This app will email your UDID to an address of your choice.

How does Cellar Backup and Cellar Sharing Work in v2.5?

Cellar Backup and Cellar Sharing are enabled through User Accounts. By creating a Drync User Account (found in Settings->My Account), you are telling us how to find your Cellar on the server. We use your email address to link your device (iPhone or iPod Touch) to your Account. Then, if you should ever lose or replace your iPhone/Touch, you will simply go to Settings->My Account->Link to Existing Account, enter your email and other required information, re-start your device, and your Cellar will magically appear on the new device.

Likewise, you can now share the same Cellar across multiple devices. Here’s how to do that:

  • Open Drync Wine on one of the devices and create a new account (Settings->My Account->Create New Account)
  • Go to your email, find the email verification message from Drync Wine, and click the validation URL
  • Open Drync Wine on the second device
  • Go to Settings->My Account->Link to Existing Account
  • Type in the email address used to create the Account for the first device
  • Again go to your email and verify the email address
  • Re-start the second device

That’s it! Both devices will now use the same Cellar, and reflect changes made on either.
